Why this city

Much of Buncombe County is not on public sewer. The county’s Environmental Health page states:

“Roughly half of the population in Buncombe County depends on septic tank systems for sewage disposal generating an estimated 10 million gallons of wastewater per day to be treated by ground absorption septic tank systems.”

What pumping typically costs

Angi and This Old House publish national ranges, not an Asheville row. One local company on this page publishes a starting price on its own site. Able Septic Tank Service, Evans Septic Pumping & Excavating, and Asheville Septic Services do not list dollar prices — ask them for a quote.

Local published starting price · Viking Environmental and Septic Services

Starting at $369

Transparent pricing: Starting at $369 with clear additional costs for excavation ($100 per foot of depth, per lid) or locating ($150) when needed.

This is the only Asheville-area pumper on this page with dollars on their site so far. It is their published starting price, not a market average.

Mountain lots around Asheville can be harder to reach. Viking publishes extras for excavation and locating on the page cited above. Other companies here do not publish those figures. Ask whether hose length, buried lids, or a steep drive are extra.

Who can legally pump in North Carolina

North Carolina requires a Septage Management Firm permit from the NC DEQ Division of Waste Management before a company pumps or transports septage. A “septage management firm” is a person in the business of pumping, transporting, storing, treating, or disposing septage.

Published new-firm permit fees on that DEQ page

  • $845 — one pump vehicle
  • $1,003 — two pump vehicles
  • $1,584 — three or more pump vehicles
  • $500 — non-pumper

For homeowners: ask the firm for its NCS permit number. DEQ assigns that number after the application and fee are received.

How to know you need pumping

Common reasons to call: backups into the house, sewage odors, or a soggy drainfield. Angi and This Old House both put most homes on a 3–5 year interval, with shorter gaps for larger households or heavy water use.

Angi FAQ (“What are the signs of a full septic tank?”) lists wastewater backing up, slow sinks and toilets, gurgling pipes, foul odors near the house or tank, pooling or spongy ground on the drain field, and a patch of grass that is suddenly greener over the system. If you see those, have a pumper inspect and pump. Angi source · This Old House source.
